Mixed feeding

For some mothers, breastfeeding is a given — they do not even ask themselves the question "Shall I breastfeed or not?". For others, however, breastfeeding is simply not an option, for various reasons or simply because they do not wish to do it. But there is a type of feeding that is less well known: mixed feeding — and it can be a great solution for many mothers.

What is mixed feeding?

Mixed feeding involves feeding a baby both by bottle and at the breast. This approach is not always straightforward to establish, as a baby who has been exclusively breastfed may sometimes struggle to accept a bottle, or even refuse it outright. It is therefore important to take things step by step in order to make this feeding approach as successful as possible.

Why choose mixed feeding?

It is worth knowing that this approach is not always chosen by mothers out of preference, but is more often considered as a way of continuing to breastfeed whilst returning to work, for example. The mother will thus be able to continue breastfeeding her child whenever she is available, and the rest of the time, her baby will be fed by bottle by whoever is looking after them.

When should you start this type of feeding?

There is no set moment as such — it will depend mainly on the mother's schedule. You will, however, need to wait until breastfeeding is fully established for the baby so that they do not become confused between breast and teat, which could put your breastfeeding at risk.

How do you introduce mixed feeding?

As mentioned above, it is important to take things gradually so that the baby can get used to switching between breast and teat. It is recommended to keep the night feeds, the morning feed on waking, and the feed before putting the baby down to sleep. Also, comfort feeds and cuddle moments should not be cut out — take it gently. It is also worth knowing that giving your baby a bottle does not necessarily mean giving them formula milk; it is therefore perfectly possible to continue giving them your breast milk by expressing the quantities needed to cover the time you are away.

Take it slowly, listen to your baby, and choose a teat that suits them — ideally a physiological teat in order to preserve their sucking action.
