Why should you keep your baby's cot clear?
When you are expecting a child, you inevitably find yourself drawn into all the conversations that concern parents and parents-to-be. Sorry, but it is almost unavoidable. We know that some of these conversations can be more prescriptive than genuinely helpful. But when it comes to the question "Why should you keep your baby's cot clear?", it is worth being able to answer confidently — and with good reason!
Why should you keep your baby's cot clear?
It is true that keeping your little one's cot free of objects is much safer. And that applies not just inside the cot, but around it too! Until the age of 12 months, your baby cannot remove objects that are bothering them — such as a blanket that has fallen over their face. Equally, they do not yet have the reflex or the ability to turn their head to avoid being trapped. There is therefore a very real risk of suffocation if you leave objects in your baby's cot! It is ultimately quite simple: the more uncluttered your infant's sleeping environment… the safer they will be!
Which objects should be avoided in the cot?
We would be tempted to say: all of them! The following should be kept out:
- Soft toys, comfort toys, and similar items;
- Blankets and muslin cloths;
- Cot bumpers;
- Pillows;
- Duvets;
- Frames and objects hung near the cot;
- Blankets or fabric draped over the sides of the cot (it looks pretty, but forget it!).
As you will have gathered, your baby's cot should contain just one thing: a mattress — and your baby! You can use a sleeping bag to keep your child warm while they sleep. And if you really feel you need a bumper, there is a solution. Semi-rigid cot bumpers do exist — they tuck under the mattress and cover the sides of the cot, protecting your baby from bumps in the night. And because of their material, they do not pose a suffocation risk. So for a safe, peaceful night's sleep, keep it simple!
