Teething

The first milk teeth appear at around 6 months. In some children, their arrival goes almost unnoticed — you suddenly realise your baby has a new tooth. In others, teething can be quite uncomfortable and accompanied by significant pain.

The appearance of milk teeth

The timing of first teeth varies greatly from child to child. Some babies are born with one or two teeth already (as was the case with Louis XIV and Napoleon...), whilst others will not see their first little tooth until after their first birthday.

Generally, teeth appear in the following order:

  • The two lower incisors, then the upper ones (between 6 and 12 months)
  • The lateral incisors (between 9 and 14 months)
  • The first molars (between 13 and 20 months)
  • The canines (between 15 and 22 months)
  • The second molars (between 24 and 36 months)

By the age of 3, your child will have all 20 of their milk teeth. Any teeth that come through after that will be permanent teeth.

Teething — sometimes a difficult time

Teething is undoubtedly one of the most challenging stages for your little one — and for you as well! During this period, every parent wonders how to relieve their baby's teething pain.

So, before your little one transforms into a Gremlin, here are a few natural solutions to soothe your baby — and yourself, of course!

Teething: warning signs to look out for

Indeed! Before thinking about how to relieve teething pain, you need to be able to identify it. Sometimes it is a case of gum swelling, which makes our little ones grumpy and rather sensitive. Either way, certain tell-tale signs can indicate that teeth are not far off:

  • Flushed cheeks
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Diarrhoea
  • Baby is sensitive, whingey, and irritable
  • Very little appetite
  • Wants to chew on everything in sight (including you — yes, really!)
  • Excessive drooling

Our natural solutions for relieving teething pain

  • Marshmallow root stick: It comes in the form of a simple… stick! If your baby is very young, you can gently rub their gums yourself with this root to soothe them. Once they are old enough to hold the marshmallow root stick safely on their own, you can let them chew on it.
  • Gum gel or gum oil: This quick-acting solution relieves your baby's teething pain thanks to the anaesthetic effect of the gum gel.

  • Teething ring: Whether wooden or chilled in the fridge, a teething ring is an essential for helping your baby satisfy their urge to chew.

  • Teething necklace: Made with food-grade silicone beads, the teething necklace is multifunctional: a breastfeeding necklace, a baby-carrying necklace, and even a stylish accessory. Do make sure to choose a necklace that meets European safety standards!

  • Homoeopathic granules : Homoeopathic granules can be given alongside another item from this list. They help to calm your baby — and indirectly, the parents too.

  • Amber necklace: Although its effectiveness has yet to be proven, an amber necklace may be an option to soothe your little one. It is said to have relaxing and calming properties against teething pain. Do be careful to choose a necklace that is suitable for babies and meets safety standards! Finally, when it comes to relieving your baby's teething pain, the best advice we can offer is to arm yourself with patience — and to cuddle as much as possible, remembering that this too shall pass!
