Natural tips to soothe mosquito bites

Well, if you're here reading this article trying to find a way to stop scratching… it might be because you missed our previous article, "Protecting your baby from mosquito bites". Which, incidentally, is useful for the whole family. Whatever the case, those nasty insects have managed to slip through your defences and bite you. And, as a result, the itching is something fierce! Here are a few natural tips to soothe mosquito bites:

1. Essential oils

Essential oils can be used in a diffuser, so the whole family can benefit. Or they can be applied directly to the skin — a drop or two on a cotton pad, dabbed onto the bites. Spike lavender, peppermint and Ceylon citronella essential oils are particularly effective. Do take care when using these oils, especially around children and pregnant women!

2. Vinegar

An old grandmother's remedy?! Perhaps, but it works! A little apple cider vinegar on a cotton pad, dabbed onto the mosquito bites. Instant relief! Apparently it also works with an ice cube, bicarbonate of soda diluted in water, or even a tea bag. Worth a try!

3. Aloe vera gel

Its cool gel effect instantly soothes the bite, thanks in particular to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

4. Soothing plants

Certain plants have soothing and antiseptic properties. These include plantain, dandelion and mint (not to be confused with a nettle, or you risk making things worse!). Simply rub a few leaves against your skin to ease the itching sensation. Now that you know your stuff when it comes to soothing those nasty mosquito bites, you're all set for summer!
