In need of a holiday, or simply a little weekend away to let off some steam? Fresh air can be a wonderful destination idea for you and your (not so) little family! But going to the mountains with your baby: is it really possible? Our team of eternal optimists thinks yes. But we're well aware that we'll need to put forward a few good arguments…
Going to the mountains with your baby: a good idea or not?!
A great idea! Getting some fresh air, taking in the scenery, enjoying quality family time… all of this is possible even with a tiny baby. It's true that it will inevitably require a little more organisation than if you were going away as a couple… Nevertheless, it is perfectly doable and, what's more, absolutely brilliant!
Simply start from the principle that if the pure mountain air does you good, then your baby will feel wonderful too.
It is advisable, however, not to go to high altitude. With a baby under one year old, 1,500 metres is the limit not to exceed. Above this height, oxygen becomes thinner.
Adapting your activities when going to the mountains with your baby
Obviously, unless you go as a family, it will be less straightforward to ski and head off on hours-long hikes. Particularly if your baby is still breastfed.
However, a stroll in the fresh air is entirely possible. Here are a few tips before going to the mountains with your baby:
- Opt for a baby carrier;
- Don't forget warm clothes and sunglasses;
- Make sure your little one drinks regularly;
- Take a break every 500m of altitude to allow your baby to acclimatise to their surroundings.
What other destinations are suitable with a very young baby?
It is possible to go to just about… anywhere! Indeed, many people travel with very young babies without any issues at all. If you're a little adventurous and ready to adapt should things go sideways, then you could well be one of those super-cool parents!
The seaside with your baby, or even camping in the forest — the possibilities are wide open!
