On returning home from the maternity unit and during the first few weeks or months, it is perfectly normal for baby to sleep in the parents' room. However, the time comes when you start wondering about the separation! But when should baby move into their own room? We have the answers!

The question many parents ask themselves: when should baby move into their own room?

Generally, the first signs that baby is ready to move into their own room appear between 4 and 6 months. Here are our tips for making that transition smoothly.

First of all, wait until baby has a regular routine: little by little, your little one will settle into a regular feeding pattern. Night wakings will gradually become less frequent. It is up to you to judge when their routine feels stable enough for you to feel comfortable settling them in their own room.

Let your child nap in their room during the day: before leaving your baby alone at night in an unfamiliar environment, it is a good idea to help them get used to the room. Try having them take their daytime naps in there. This will give them time to adjust.

Finally, create a night-time space in your baby's room: in order to make night feeds manageable, it is essential to set up a dedicated area in the room. You will need a few key items: a night light, a nursing chair, or a small rug to create a cosy atmosphere.

Important: our last key piece of advice is to make only one change at a time. In other words, do not combine the move to their own room with a change of milk formula, for example. One change at a time for baby!

When should baby move into their own room: what is the right moment?

The truth is, there is no perfect moment. Equally, keep in mind that every parent acts according to their own wishes, constraints, and feelings.

That said, when you do move baby into their room, do not forget to keep an eye" on them. Think about using a baby monitor, or simply leaving bedroom doors open so you can hear your little one.

Take it gently when moving baby into their own room!

Do not do it abruptly — prepare the ground first! You would not want baby to feel abandoned. To do this, do not hesitate to talk to your little one, even if they are too young to answer back.

Also, do not let your own anxieties show! Take it slowly by introducing a gentle transition. For example, move from a co-sleeper cot to a separate cot close to you. Then gradually move the cot a little further away within your room, until you reach the final step: the big move into their very own room!

Dear parents, do not be disheartened if baby wakes in the night! It will happen. But everything has to start somewhere — your baby will eventually adapt to this new arrangement.
