Making the most of your tumble dryer water: tips and advice
In our daily lives, water management has become a major concern. That is why it is worth learning how to reuse tumble dryer water for various household tasks. In this article, I share some ideas for ecological and economical uses for this often-overlooked water.
Characteristics of tumble dryer water
First of all, it is important to understand that the water collected in your tumble dryer's reservoir comes from the condensation of moisture extracted from your clothes during drying. This demineralised water is admittedly slightly less pure than tap water, but has several advantages:
It contains no limescale, which makes it less harsh on certain surfaces and appliances
It can be collected free of charge with each load of laundry
It helps to reduce your ecological footprint by cutting down on your consumption of drinking water
Ideas for using tumble dryer water
Watering plants
One of the simplest uses for tumble dryer water is watering your indoor and outdoor plants. Indeed, this demineralised water is ideal for plants that are sensitive to limescale, such as orchids.
Household maintenance
This water can also be used to maintain your home. Here are a few ideas:
Washing floors: tumble dryer water is particularly well suited to delicate floors (hardwood, laminate, etc.) that do not cope well with the limescale found in tap water.
Cleaning windows and mirrors: thanks to its absence of limescale, this water leaves no marks on glass surfaces.
Dusting: lightly dampen a cloth with tumble dryer water to dust your furniture effectively without leaving white limescale marks.
Laundry
As the collected water already contains some soap residue from the previous wash, it can be reused to wash your clothes again. You can then top it up with a little detergent suitable for your laundry.
Water management in the bathroom
To save drinking water, you can use tumble dryer water to:
Rinse your flannel after a shower or bath
Fill toilet cisterns, by pouring a bucket of water directly into the bowl after each use, or by filling a bottle and placing it in the cistern mechanism
Wash and rinse toothbrushes, using a tooth glass containing collected water
Tips for preparing and storing tumble dryer water
To make using this water easier, here are some practical tips:
Filtration
It is preferable to filter the collected water to avoid the presence of unwanted particles (fluff, hair, etc.). To do this, simply use a paper coffee filter or a piece of fine fabric placed in a sieve, for example.
Storage
To store this water, choose an airtight container with a lid, such as an old laundry detergent bottle, a jerrycan with a pouring spout, or a large transparent container fitted with a pump. The container must be perfectly clean and contain no traces of chemicals. Also remember to change the water regularly to prevent the growth of micro-organisms.
Organisation
To make access to this water easier during your household tasks, you can create labels to identify the contents of each container, or install a dedicated tap to make it easier to fill and dispense the collected water.
By following this advice, you can make the most of your tumble dryer water to save water whilst respecting the environment.
