It happens all too often that we throw away things that could have a second life. Thankfully, second-hand shopping is booming when it comes to objects and clothing — but these are not the only things we can reuse. Did you know that some of our food waste can have a second life too? There is, of course, composting! But there are also other uses for products that can serve a purpose after their initial use. The best example is coffee grounds! Whether for gardening, as an odour neutraliser, or in your homemade cosmetics, coffee grounds have a wealth of benefits — it would be a shame to waste them!

Today, we are going to show you how to make an effective, zero-waste, anti-food-waste Coffee and Coconut scrub!

Why make a coffee grounds scrub?

Coffee granules make for an effective yet gentle scrub. They also have the added benefit of helping to combat cellulite.

Why use coconut oil for this scrub?

Coconut oil has several advantages. It is well known for its repairing and moisturising properties, much like rhassoul clay. It absorbs quickly and leaves no greasy residue. Finally, it is naturally solid below around 20°C, which allows us to mould our scrub bars.

How to make your coffee and coconut scrub

Collect the coffee grounds from your morning coffee and tip them into a bowl.

Zero-waste scrub

Fill the second bowl using the following ratio: one teaspoon of coffee grounds to one teaspoon of coconut oil. Mix well. This action will melt your coconut oil.

Natural scrub recipe

Fill the base of your mould with coconut oil, preferably slightly solidified. If the oil is liquid, the coffee grounds will sink to the bottom of the mould and your scrub bars will not hold their shape properly.

Pour your coffee and coconut mixture into the mould, filling it to about three-quarters full.

Coconut coffee scrub

Place in the fridge for approximately 1 hour.

Turn out your scrub bars and store them in a glass container, which should be kept in the fridge.

How to use your coffee grounds and coconut oil scrub bars?

It could not be simpler! Dampen your scrub bar slightly with warm water and it will begin to melt, then use it just as you would any regular scrub. Massage your body from top to bottom using circular movements for approximately 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Your skin will feel wonderfully soft, without any greasiness at all.

We recommend using it about once a week. Using just 8 teaspoons of coconut oil, we got a whole month's worth of body scrub! This recipe is therefore very economical as well as being zero-waste.
