How to protect your baby from the winter cold?
Winter is just around the corner: snow, earlier sunsets, snowmen, sledging, cosy thick blankets… But winter never comes alone. It brings its fair share of little troubles, and illnesses are inevitably part of the picture: colds, bronchitis, rhinopharyngitis… For adults, winter cold is nothing out of the ordinary, but for babies, it is essential to take a few precautions to avoid spending the whole season at the paediatrician's. So, how do you properly protect your baby from the cold?
Warm, appropriate clothing
It goes without saying that in winter, we buy warm clothes. But for babies, it is really important to choose garments that are as practical as they are comfortable. Opt for all-in-one snowsuits rather than jackets: a snowsuit will keep your baby snug from head to toe. It may be slightly more expensive than a jacket, but it retains heat far better. It is also waterproof in rainy or snowy weather.
The footmuff
An absolute winter essential, it perfectly combines practicality with style: a footmuff lets you move your baby from the pushchair to the pram or into the car seat without taking them out of their cosy cocoon. Most winter footmuffs have a fleece lining and are designed to allow the harnesses of car seats and pushchairs to pass through.
Minimise temperature differences
Be careful not to overheat your home, as the temperature gap with the outside could easily cause your little one harm — the same goes for your car.
When you are out and about, remember to uncover your baby when you go into a shop or any other warm place, so their body can regulate its temperature properly. If your baby sweats, they are more likely to catch a chill.
Well-deserved rest
It is well known that in winter, our bodies experience a slight dip in energy and need to draw on their reserves to keep functioning. Make sure your baby rests and sleeps well so they have all the energy they need to protect themselves from the cold and illness.
Your baby needs particular care when outside temperatures are at their extremes — so take the necessary precautions and enjoy a gentle winter!
Protect your baby's skin
Babies have particularly delicate skin. As a result, cold weather makes it very vulnerable. It can cause redness, dry patches, and even chapping. That is why it is important to protect your baby's skin by applying a nourishing cream, paying special attention to the driest areas.
