DIY - Homemade bubble solution

Ah, bubbles! They bring a little touch of magic to everyday life! Children absolutely love them and can literally be kept busy for hours! And given the circumstances, we might as well make the most of it!

The trouble is, they run out at the speed of light! Especially since, more often than not, the bubble wand will end up on the floor when it was still three-quarters full... You've been there too, haven't you!!! On top of that, they're not exactly cheap! And you really don't want to be heading to the supermarket every other day (especially right now, ahem...) to buy more!!!

That's why, today, we're sharing a recipe for homemade bubble solution that really works brilliantly. It's also very simple to make, using ingredients most of us already have in our cupboards.

Homemade bubble solution

As someone keen to reduce waste, I don't use shower gel or washing-up liquid on a daily basis (not that I don't wash anything, but I prefer solid options: soap for washing myself and a dish soap bar for the dishes). I therefore had to fall back on black soap to make this homemade bubble solution. It works, but it's not the best option. To make nice, long-lasting bubbles, it's important to use a product rich in glycerine, which is why washing-up liquid or, failing that, shower gel will work better.

Equipment needed to make your bubble solution

  • A bowl
  • A bubble wand or a straw
  • An egg cup or a large bottle cap to use as a measure

Step-by-step instructions for making your own bubble solution

Pour two measures of water into your bowl, then add half a measure of sugar and stir well to dissolve it.

Next, add a teaspoon of cornflour. You can also add a little food colouring at this stage if you'd like to give the bubbles a beautiful shimmer, though this is entirely optional. Mix everything together well.

Finally, add one measure of black soap (or washing-up liquid or shower gel) and stir gently so that it doesn't foam up too much.

You then need to let the mixture rest until the foam disappears. The solution won't work if it's still foamy.

Typically, if your mixture looks like this, it won't work.

But by leaving it to rest, the foam will settle and the solution will be ready to use.

Finally, simply pour the contents of the bowl into a bubble wand container — your bubble solution is then ready to use.

If you don't have one, you can use a straw directly in the bowl — that works too. You'll get lovely little bubbles!

And there you have it — your child will have enough to keep them busy for hours, and you'll never have to worry about running out of bubble solution again!!!
