Protecting Your Baby from the Sun

The warm weather is here and it really is wonderful! The heat and longer days are perfect for lounging by the water. But beware — summer inevitably means sun. And with a baby, you need to be especially careful, as their delicate skin is very sensitive to UV rays. Here are 7 tips for protecting your baby from the sun:

Avoid exposure during the hottest hours

Sun exposure gives us vitamin D — it is good for us, but only in small doses and always with proper protection. This is even more true for your baby! Avoid sun exposure during the hottest hours, between 12pm and 5pm. Have you ever tried the beach in the morning? The atmosphere is wonderfully peaceful, and your baby will enjoy it far more than being out in the blazing midday sun.

A UV-protection tent

A UV-protection tent is very easy to carry and sets up in next to no time. It shields your little one from the sun's harmful rays. Do be careful, however — the temperature inside can rise very quickly, so place it in the shade where possible.

A suitable swimming outfit

Miniature two-piece swimsuits are adorable, we can all agree! But they offer no protection against the sun. Opt instead for a long-sleeved UV-protection swimsuit to keep your baby safe from heatstroke.

Head protection for your baby

Essential, and yet so many parents still forget it. A sun hat, a cap, a beret — whatever you like, but do cover your child's head! (A winter bobble hat is probably going a bit far!)

A high-quality sun cream

Your best friend this summer is undoubtedly a high-protection sunscreen (SPF 50+). Choose a sun cream formulated for sensitive skin and fragrance-free.

Water or milk on demand

Offer your baby water regularly, or milk if they are breastfed. Dehydration can happen quickly, so let us be careful!

Sunglasses

Once again, babies are far more sensitive than we adults are — and this applies to the sun's rays in their eyes too! The dangers of UV rays are invisible at first, which is why so many people do not pay attention to them. But they can cause real damage — sometimes irreversible! You might be thinking: "Goodness, there is so much to think about!" But all of this is truly essential for protecting your little one from the sun — and when it comes to safety and health, there is no cutting corners!
