The mental load

The mental load

Still too rarely discussed, the mental load is an expression used to describe a certain cognitive "burden" that falls primarily on women. And more specifically, on mothers, who have to manage countless aspects of daily life. The mental load finally made it into the dictionary in 2020. But what exactly is it?

The mental load in everyday life

You could also call it the "syndrome of the exhausted woman who has to think of everything". If you recognise yourself in that, then we're clearly onto something! It's quite a sensitive subject, because it is rare for mothers to complain. Almost as if it were a taboo topic — as if you always have to put on a brave face. Yet at some point, the body and/or the mind cries out "STOP". The mental load means feeling as though the entire household organisation rests on your shoulders: the children's homework, meals, household chores, appointments — not to mention your own professional life… the daily routine! But sometimes, even when the division of tasks is more or less equal with your partner, that mental load is still there…

Lifting a weight from your shoulders

Far more than just a feeling, this weight on your shoulders is very real. Both physically and psychologically. In the most extreme cases, it can lead to burnout and even depression. It is essential to be able to talk about it! With your partner, your friends, or even a professional. Whatever it takes — it is crucial to release that mental load! Here are a few tips to help you see things more clearly:

  • Reassess your priorities: do not dwell on everything — be a little kinder to yourself.

  • Take time for yourself: easier said than done, of course. But even if it is just the time it takes to have a cup of tea. Ten minutes to sit down and breathe.
  • Better organisation: make lists! Organising yourself with to-do lists helps you to see the week's schedule more clearly. It goes a long way towards lightening the lists you carry… in your head!
  • DE-LE-GATE: even if it is just by giving the children simple tasks. Setting the table, walking the dog, tidying their room… And if your partner is a bit on the idle side, perhaps it is time to open up about how you are feeling — don't you think?
