The Transitional Object

The transitional object is, by definition, "an object heavily invested by the young child, providing the transition between the first oral relationship with the mother and object relations."

In young children, this object helps to ease separation anxiety. Do you know what we're talking about? Simply the comfort toy!

The transitional object — essential for our babies' well-being?

This transitional object can take several forms: a soft toy, a toy, a muslin cloth with mum's scent, or even a thumb! As its name suggests, this material possession helps children move from one state to another, accompanying them through their emotions.

The transitional object truly becomes useful around 3 to 4 months of age. Some even see it as a step towards independence — and an essential object for the psychological well-being of our little ones!

How to choose this transitional object?

In a way, it's not really the parents who choose it — it's the child! It's not uncommon to see a newborn who's been given piles of soft toys and playthings, not knowing what to do with any of them… and who ultimately lavishes all their attention on a worn-out old muslin cloth. Does that ring a bell?! This transitional object will become important to them, and will help to reassure them while their brain is still maturing.

That said, some children simply don't feel the need for one.

The time to let go of the transitional object

As with a dummy, it can sometimes be difficult for a child to part with their comfort toy. Often around the age of 3, when they start school, a child must begin to do without it. Sometimes they manage to give it up well before then. If not, it's important to support them through the process — and above all, to talk it through together.
