Is your baby ready for potty training?

Is your baby ready for potty training? That's a very good question! Because many people still approach it the wrong way, asking whether it's time to teach their child continence. In fact, this new step in learning toilet independence can only happen when your child is ready! Not when the parents are ready!

So here's a short article to better understand the rhythm of our little ones.

Is your baby ready for potty training? A few recognised milestones

This is an important milestone in your little one's development — who, it must be said, is starting to become a not-so-little one! But how can we tell whether our baby is ready to be potty trained? Not that they were dirty, of course — we'll grant you that.

As a general rule, potty training tends to happen between 18 months and 36 months. Sometimes even later for some children. A few signs can point us in the right direction, whether physiological or psychological:

  • The child can go up and down stairs alone, alternating feet;
  • They verbalise their need to use the toilet;
  • The little cherub may also show interest in the potty, or even the toilet directly;
  • Your little one will undress themselves, either fully or mostly;
  • Their diaper stays dry for several hours at a time…

Of course, these milestones are indicative only and may occur at different times depending on the child.

Can you help your baby with potty training?

It is possible to support your little one when you notice a certain interest in the potty or toilet, as well as a degree of physiological maturity. You can then act as a gentle guide in their potty training journey, without being intrusive or applying pressure.

It is then possible to:

  • Introduce small games to encourage them, such as a chart on which they can stick their toilet achievements! A "wee" sticker for a wee, and a "poo" sticker for a number two.
  • Read books they can identify with, featuring little characters who are also learning to use the toilet;
  • Make the potty available, or place a step stool in the bathroom so they can be as independent as possible.

It is important to respect each child's own pace so as not to rush them, and to take on a purely supportive role.

Ready for the potty: signs and tips for supporting your baby through potty training:

Deciding on the right time to begin potty training is often a major concern. This article dispels the doubts by presenting the physiological and psychological signs of maturity that indicate your little one is ready.

Potty training, generally observed between 18 and 36 months, is accompanied by signals such as the ability to go up and down stairs, verbally expressing the need to go, and showing interest in the potty or toilet. To support this delicate process, the article offers practical advice, such as introducing encouraging games, reading appropriate stories, and providing accessories that foster independence.

By respecting each child's individual rhythm, parents can play the role of a gentle, supportive guide without imposing undue pressure, thus helping to make this experience a rewarding one for the whole family.
