DIY - Make Your Own Dishwasher Tablets

Maman & Bébé Nature mars 8, 2018 Zero waste 0 Comments

Dishwasher owners who are committed to an eco-responsible lifestyle are always on the lookout for an alternative to commercial dishwasher tablets. They are, after all, highly polluting and generate a fair amount of waste. Making your own dishwasher tablets is far simpler than you might imagine. Once you have gathered the right ingredients, you'll need less than a quarter of an hour to make around twenty tablets.

To make around twenty dishwasher tablets

- 60g bicarbonate of soda

- 60g citric acid

- 60g fine salt

- 60g washing soda crystals

- 2 tbsp water

- 20 drops of peppermint essential oil (you can also use tea tree or lemon — whichever you prefer)

- 1 ice cube tray

- 1 airtight container

Dishwasher tablet ingredients

Method

Mix together the bicarbonate of soda, citric acid, fine salt and washing soda crystals.

Then add 20 drops of peppermint essential oil, continuing to mix. You can stop at this stage and use the mixture as a powder — it works perfectly well that way too!

Next, add the water very slowly — you really need very little. The mixture will fizz slightly; this is completely normal. The mixture should crumble easily.

Finally, pour the mixture into your ice cube tray.

Press down firmly with a spoon — this is important, otherwise the tablets won't hold together properly.

Leave them to set for at least 5 hours before turning them out.

Store them in an airtight container, in a cool, dark place away from light and heat.

Don't forget to collect any powder that didn't set into tablets — it can be used in the pre-wash compartment of your dishwasher. It would be a shame to waste it, wouldn't it?!

How to use your homemade dishwasher tablets

Use them in exactly the same way as your usual dishwasher tablets. If your dishes are particularly dirty, we recommend using two tablets. Also, if your water is quite hard, we suggest adding a cup of white vinegar to your rinse-aid compartment.
