Starting with the childminder

The time has come to leave your precious one in the hands of an "almost-stranger". It may well be the very first time you will leave your little one for an entire day without being by their side… Right, let's not twist the knife further. Let's talk about that famous topic: settling in at the childminder's.

We swallow our fears, shed a few tears if needed, and find solutions to make everything go as smoothly and gently as possible. Rest assured, it is possible!

Settling in at the childminder's: harder for the parents or for the baby?

This is a question that truly arises when you see young parents in a panic at the thought of leaving their little cherub. Don't worry, nearly all of us go through this — except those lucky enough to raise their children without having to return to work quickly (jammy lot!).

However, it is worth knowing that a smooth settling-in at the childminder's depends enormously on the mindset of mum and dad — and in particular, whoever is dropping the baby off at the childminder's. Indeed, your child will sense your anxiety and your fears if you are in that state. It is therefore essential to be calm and at ease at that moment. Easier said than done, we know! Nevertheless, here are a few pointers to reassure yourself and, in turn, reassure your baby.

A few tips

  1. GEN-TLY: of course, wherever possible, you should avoid leaving your baby with someone they have never met before. So, before going back to work full-time, introduce your child to the childminder gradually. One hour the first time, then two hours, and so on — so that everything goes smoothly!
  2. Talk about it... with your baby: yes, really! Don't be afraid to talk to your little one — they understand far more than we think.
  3. Don't linger too long: this isn't about sneaking off when your baby's back is turned, quite the opposite. It's more about not dragging out the goodbyes.
  4. The comfort toy: whether it's a little rabbit or a blanket that carries your scent... leave your child with something to bring them comfort. A familiar object that can help them when they feel your absence.

Ultimately — and this goes without saying — it is crucial to feel comfortable with the childminder and to be reassured about how they work. Take the time to share your concerns and your hopes with them!

And you — how did the settling-in at the childminder's go?
