10 Essentials for Baby's Bath Time
After a few days of summery temperatures, our thoughts are already turning to the holidays! A wonderful opportunity to introduce your little one to the joys of the swimming pool or the seaside. Generally speaking, little ones adore water and playing in the sand — so some lovely times are in store! But it's also quite an organisational feat, making sure you have everything you need with a young baby, without weighing yourself down with unnecessary extras. Here is a quick overview of the 10 things you absolutely must have with you when you're near the water with a baby.
Swim Nappies
To avoid little accidents in the water, many parents choose to use disposable swim nappies. Whilst they do the job, they have two significant drawbacks. First, they generate waste. And secondly, they absorb water, swell up, and become very heavy — which is far from ideal for your child's comfort. Reusable swim nappies hold in solids without restricting your baby's movements. So you can enjoy the joys of swimming with your little one to the fullest!
Spare nappies
To avoid the risk of hypothermia, it is recommended to remove your baby's swim nappy as soon as they leave the water and allow it to dry. You will therefore need nappies on hand to avoid any little accidents by the water's edge.
A misting fan
A misting fan is really ideal for cooling your baby down gently during a heatwave.
A waterproof bag
A waterproof bag is ideal for storing your child's wet swim nappy without soaking everything else, and it also works brilliantly for storing your baby's dirty pocket diapers.
By the water, it can get very hot. It is extremely important to keep your child hydrated by offering them drinks regularly. There are now insulated baby bottles and water bottles available, which are very practical for keeping water cool. If your baby is still exclusively breastfed, adding water will not be necessary — but you should offer the breast regularly.
A change of clothes
As with going anywhere with a baby, having a spare change of clothes on hand can always come in useful.
A beach towel or hooded bath towel
Essential for drying baby off. A hooded bath towel has the added benefit of being easy to slip on, so your child dries off even faster.
Sun cream and/or a UV-protective top
An absolute essential for little ones and grown-ups alike, sun cream should be applied as soon as you are about to head into the water and reapplied after every swim. UV-protective tops retain their protective properties even when wet, unlike sun cream. They therefore provide excellent protection for sensitive areas such as the back and shoulders. When choosing your UV top, look for a zip fastening, which is much easier to remove when wet. Opt for a UPF50+ rating, which blocks up to 98% of UV rays.

A hat
A hat is an absolute essential for protecting your baby from the sun. Ideally, it's worth having two — which parent hasn't experienced the great hat-throwing-from-the-pram incident? There are models with brims and even a small neck flap for extra protection.
A pair of sunglasses
Babies' eyes are far more fragile than ours. That's why it is absolutely essential to protect your baby's eyes with sunglasses near the water, and indeed whenever the sun is shining. A category 4 lens is truly ideal for very young children. A category 3 lens can also work if that's what you have!
Of course, this list is far from exhaustive and will be supplemented depending on your baby's age (armbands, floats, etc.), your destination (water shoes, sand toys, etc.), and how long you plan to stay (cool box, UV tent, etc.). What are your essentials for baby's time by the water?
