Although the name might almost make the famous baby cradle cap sound rather cute, it has absolutely nothing to do with the cosy little feed you might picture! Indeed, this very common skin condition in our little ones is not quite what you might imagine at first. We tell you everything here about cradle cap in babies: what is it? When does it appear? How do you get rid of it? All the questions we have all asked ourselves! Right then — no more secrets about cradle cap!

So what exactly is baby cradle cap?

What is commonly known as cradle cap is, under its more scientific name, seborrhoeic dermatitis. To be more precise, it is a condition affecting the scalp that causes crusty patches — as well as greasy, white or yellow scales that adhere to the skin of the scalp itself. They may also be surrounded by redness. Their purpose for appearing? Very simple.

Where does baby cradle cap appear?

It shows up without warning! Sometimes appearing shyly at the top of the skull near the fontanelle, it spreads and can even creep beyond the scalp it initially targeted. Cradle cap can therefore appear behind the ear — as if whispering to the baby that it means business — and can boldly make its way to the base of the eyelashes and eyebrows!

The most severe form, moreover, is not short of ideas — cradle cap likes to make itself at home in all the skin folds, including the nappy area! It will leave these areas bright red, just to make sure nothing is missed! But let us reassure those who are most worried: cradle cap causes no itching whatsoever and no discomfort for your baby. Nor does it carry any risk of contagion. But you are probably wondering at what point it decides to make an appearance?

When does baby cradle cap begin?

Bold as you like, cradle cap typically appears around two weeks after the baby's arrival. It is often during that precious bath time that it makes its determined bid to settle into the little one's scalp.

It can present in two particular forms. First, the dry form of cradle cap, which appears when the baby has a predisposition to oily skin. And the moist form, which falls under allergic eczema. To remove it, there is one specific course of action.

How do I remove my baby's cradle cap?

Well, it is not especially complicated — you simply need to be patient and consistent with your newborn's cradle cap care routine. Carrying out daily treatments will help you avoid inflammation of one or more cradle cap patches. And hold back —

Do not scratch it — ever! An infection can happen so easily! Instead, perform gentle massages using a suitable shampoo, which your paediatrician will be more than happy to recommend. The aim: softened cradle cap that will give way to reveal your little one's brand new head.

When will it disappear?

Honestly, the whole thing can be sorted in two weeks! But if it is not, then it is time to be concerned. Indeed, if after two weeks of diligent cleansing and care aimed at clearing it up you see no improvement — or even a worsening of the affected area — seek advice promptly, now that you know everything about cradle cap!
