Bamboo is a great alternative to plastic.
Most conventional plastic toothbrushes are impossible to recycle and, “at best,” are incinerated. More specifically, nearly 5 billion plastic toothbrushes end up in our seas and oceans.
As for growing bamboo, it’s very simple: it doesn’t require much water and, most importantly, it doesn’t deplete the soil.
Some trees and plants are affected by deforestation, but not bamboo. This plant is known for being the fastest-growing in the world (about 1 meter per day), so it regenerates quickly. It is a sustainable and rapidly renewable material, unlike certain other types of wood that can take up to 30 years to reach a harvestable size.
In addition, bamboo helps reduce pressure on forests and requires neither fertilizer nor pesticides. Therefore, it contains no toxic substances and does not pollute the soil!
Given that a toothbrush has a lifespan of about 3 months, this resource appears to be the most effective option for reducing waste.
Compostable and biodegradable, these toothbrushes have a minimal environmental impact when manufactured in the country where the bamboo is sourced, since they are subsequently imported. This is the production method chosen by Jolis Baumes, the creator of these toothbrushes.
