DIY - Playing with Oobleck Sensory Dough
For this mini-break, we'd like to suggest a truly astonishing activity that requires very little equipment: making Oobleck sensory dough!
What is Oobleck sensory dough?
Oobleck sensory dough, also known simply as Oobleck, is a non-Newtonian fluid: in short, the dough is solid, and the moment you pick it up, it flows.
This activity is suitable for children from the age of 2, but older children and adults enjoy it just as much. It is a wonderful sensory experience — the dough can be kneaded or poured, and you can play with it whilst watching it change states. Beyond its playful and fascinating qualities, it also has a very calming effect.
To make your Oobleck sensory dough
Ingredients
- 3 parts cornflour
- 1 part water
- Food colouring (optional, but it looks much more fun)

Equipment needed
- A soup plate
- A fork (optional)
How to make Oobleck sensory dough
1) Pour the cornflour into a soup plate.

2) Add the water and mix by hand or with a fork.

3) Add food colouring if you'd like to colour your Oobleck, and mix again.

4) Adjust with more water or cornflour as needed. The Oobleck should be smooth, viscous, slightly thick but still liquid.

5) Your Oobleck is ready — have fun poking, squeezing, and squishing it!

6) Don't forget to add more water as needed — it evaporates quickly during play.
How to play with Oobleck
Take some Oobleck in your hands. When your hands are closed, the dough is solid. But as soon as you open your fingers, it transforms into a liquid and runs between them! Conversely, if you bang hard on the container of Oobleck, you'll hit what feels like a solid, very hard surface.

Tips for avoiding making a complete mess with Oobleck
Let's be honest — Oobleck is incredibly messy! But the good news is that it cleans up easily. A little water is all it takes to remove it from your hands and containers. For anything else, leave the substance to dry — it will turn back into a powder and can easily be brushed off clothing. A simple wipe with a damp sponge is enough to clean your table or floor! And if you really want to make life easy for yourself, use a wipe-clean tablecloth — just rinse it and the job's done!
