Stage 1: Colostrum, the first breast milk

Colostrum is the first milk produced by the mother's breasts after birth. This thick, yellowish substance is produced in small quantities, but it is a true goldmine for the newborn. Here are some of its many benefits:

Rich in antibodies and immune factors

Colostrum is extremely rich in antibodies (in particular immunoglobulin A) and immune factors that protect the baby against infections and strengthen their fragile immune system. Thanks to colostrum, the newborn benefits from a first natural "vaccination" of sorts.

High levels of essential nutrients

Despite its small quantity, colostrum provides the newborn with all the nutrients they need to make a good start in life: proteins, vitamins (A, D, E, K), minerals (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium), and trace elements. It is also very rich in growth factors that support the development of the baby's organs.

Gentle laxative effect

Colostrum also helps the newborn to pass their first stools, known as meconium. This helps to eliminate excess bilirubin and prevent neonatal jaundice.

Stage 2: Transitional milk, the bridge to mature milk

After a few days, colostrum gives way to transitional milk. This intermediate stage generally lasts one to two weeks and marks the gradual passage to mature milk. Here are the main characteristics of transitional milk:

Increase in milk volume produced

As the newborn's energy needs increase, the quantity of milk produced by the mother's breasts adapts accordingly. Transitional milk is therefore more plentiful than colostrum.

Change in nutritional composition

The protein content of transitional milk decreases slightly, whilst its fat and carbohydrate content increases. This provides the child with more energy to support their rapid growth. Vitamins and minerals remain present in significant quantities.

Decrease in antibody concentration

The immunoglobulin content and other immune factors in transitional milk gradually decrease, but remain nonetheless significant in protecting the baby against infections and strengthening their immune system.

Stage 3: Mature milk, a source of energy and nutrients tailored to your baby's needs

Mature milk takes over from transitional milk and forms the main source of nutrition for the newborn throughout the entire breastfeeding period. Here are its main characteristics:

Stable volume of milk produced

Milk production stabilises over the weeks and adjusts according to the baby's demand, thanks to a hormonal regulation mechanism. The quantities produced can therefore vary from one woman to another and at different times of the day.

Constant adaptation of nutritional composition

Mature milk is composed of approximately 87% water, 4% fat, 1% protein, and 7% carbohydrates (mainly in the form of lactose). Its composition, however, evolves continuously to meet the specific needs of the baby at each stage of their growth. For example, the fat content may increase when the child needs more energy.

Maintenance of immunological properties

Mature milk retains a concentration of immunoglobulins and other immune factors which, although lower than that of colostrum, continues to protect the baby against infections and strengthen their immune system.

Support for digestion and brain development

  • Breast milk contains digestive enzymes that facilitate the digestion and absorption of nutrients by the newborn.
  • It is also rich in essential fatty acids (particularly omega-3) that play a crucial role in the development of the child's brain and cognitive functions.
