Baby has dark circles but sleeps well: how to explain it?

Baby is in great shape, growing well, eating perfectly, and to top it all off, sleeping through the night! And yet one shadow over the picture leaves us puzzled... Baby has dark circles even though he sleeps well! What?? It’s almost baffling! So to answer this rather unusual question, here are a few lines dedicated to those shadows under our little one’s eyes!

What are dark circles?

A quick bit of background knowledge can already help us understand these dark circles that appear under baby’s eyes even when he sleeps well. Dark circles refer to a variation in skin colour located precisely beneath the eye. Their existence comes down to the extremely thin skin in that area on the one hand, and to congestion in the vascular system, which shows through the skin on the other. For this reason, the area darkens, taking on a shade that varies from one person to another. Red, purple, sometimes reddish — it’s hard to predict!

An important distinction worth noting: we sometimes talk about puffiness, but that refers to something slightly different. Indeed, unlike dark circles, bags under the eyes more closely resemble an oedema of the lower eyelids — essentially fatty deposits more or less filled with fluid, giving the impression of swelling beneath the eye.

While we often associate dark circles with age or poor lifestyle habits, we naturally wonder why our little ones might have them too.

So if baby sleeps well, why does he have dark circles? First possibility: it’s hereditary!

If you are absolutely certain that sleep is going well for your little one, it is quite likely that the origin of these dark circles is purely and simply heredity! Indeed, some families may be more prone to having these reddish or purplish veins visible — and therefore to having a noticeably marked area beneath the eyes. In short, there is no reason to worry!

An allergy or an infection can also be the cause of baby’s dark circles, even when he sleeps well!

Sometimes baby has such dark circles that we can’t help but feel concerned. If heredity doesn’t seem to be the reason, the cause may be health-related. It’s worth mentioning it to your paediatrician, who will check whether it is in fact caused by an underlying condition. In particular, it may be a sign of an allergy, or of a respiratory tract infection, such as a cold, flu, or sinusitis.

Moreover, a congested nose does indeed hinder blood circulation, which leads to dilation and, in some cases, darkening of the veins running from the eyes to the nose. Finally, if your suspicions point towards an allergy to dust mites or animal dander, it is also worth having a word with your doctor. That said, dark circles can also conceal a skin-related issue in baby.

A sign of a skin condition

To wrap up on the topic of baby having dark circles despite sleeping well, we should also mention that it can be due to a skin condition. Indeed, dark circles can appear in the case of eyelid eczema in particular. This is recognisable by a certain dryness, as well as red patches and even areas of flaking skin on the eyelids, whether upper or lower.

So if you notice that your little one scratches a lot, has dry skin and red patches, it is very likely to be eczema. And in that case, once again, your paediatrician will be on hand to help!
