How to choose earrings for children
A pretty pair of earrings: you may be dreaming of giving a pair to your daughter, whether she is little or already a (pre-)teenager... In this article, we share some practical tips on choosing earrings for children according to their age, and on the criteria to consider when making a purchase.
The right age to have ears pierced
The subject is a sensitive one and is approached differently depending on the country and cultural traditions. Many parents wonder at what age it is possible to have their child's ears pierced. Some paediatricians consider that a baby's ears can be pierced as early as three months of age.
Indeed, a baby of that age is not yet afraid of going to the doctor, so the process generally goes quite smoothly. At three months, the earlobes are already more developed, which makes it possible to ensure the piercings will be well aligned. The temporary earrings the child will need to wear at first can be replaced by other earrings of your choice, once the piercings have healed completely.
Ultimately, there is no fixed age as such, since the decision is a very personal one. Many parents choose to wait until the child is old enough to take part in the decision-making process, so as to make it a shared family memory. Furthermore, children require the signed consent of at least one parent to have their ears pierced.
Children's earrings: what should you look out for?

Size: Earrings should be proportional to the size of the earlobe so that they suit the child well. Look for jewellery specifically designed for children, which is lighter so as not to weigh down young earlobes.
Metal: Some metals are better suited than others to a child's sensitive skin. 14-carat gold earrings are ideal, as this type of gold means they will not lose their shape and carry less risk of allergies than silver or non-gold jewellery. Rose gold is a particularly popular type of metal for children's designs. Surgical steel is a more budget-friendly alternative.
Safety: Children are always on the move, so to prevent your child's earrings from catching on things or getting lost, choose a secure fastening and a smooth surface that will not unnecessarily expose the child to the risk of injury.
Baby's first earrings
Earrings with a front fastening are designed for babies and toddlers. The front fastening mechanism keeps the earrings firmly in place. It consists of two parts: a moving part that slides into the eyelet of the other part and clips onto it. The fastening is comfortable to wear. The back of the earrings is smooth so as not to bother the baby. Front-fastening earrings are designed for the youngest children and their size is taken into account: they are worn up to approximately 3 years of age.
Earrings for little girls

Starting nursery school is a lovely occasion to give your little girl a pretty pair of earrings. For girls aged three and over, you can choose earrings with a classic lever-back fastening, small hoops, or stud earrings with a screw-back fastening. This last option is certainly a better choice for children than the classic butterfly back, which does not stay in place as well.
Nature and minimalism

Little girls will love taking part in choosing a pretty pair of earrings to their taste. The most popular motifs amongst children are ladybirds, butterflies, birds, flowers, and fruit. Girls also love earrings adorned with gemstones, which add a touch of cheerfulness.
Gemstones also represent a long-term investment. You can also opt for simple geometric shapes. At the KLENOTA jewellery workshop, they offer simple hearts, stars, and teardrops. Why not take the opportunity to match mother and daughter?
Caring for earrings and pierced ears
There are some particular considerations when children wear earrings. Whilst adults are advised to remove their earrings in the evening to sleep, for children it is recommended to keep them in day and night so that the piercings do not close up.
Check the child's ears and earrings at least once a week, for example before washing their hair: remove the earrings, wash them in warm soapy water, and gently clean the area. This will prevent any infection and stop the holes from closing up.
