Post-partum hair loss: our tips and advice
We often hear about pregnant women and their beautiful, lustrous, full-of-life hair. But after pregnancy, it is very often quite the opposite! Post-partum hair loss is one of the unpleasant side effects that can follow childbirth. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you get through it — so you don't end up with nothing left on top!
Post-partum hair loss: what is it?
It is also known as post-partum alopecia. Or, brace yourself for a technical mouthful: acute telogen effluvium. Yes, it does sound a bit alarming! Let us explain. This hair loss generally occurs within the 5 months following childbirth. It is caused by a drop in hormone levels, but may also be linked to other factors. For instance, women who are breastfeeding tend to experience less hair loss. It can also be related to the time of year when you give birth. In any case, it is not inevitable, ladies!
A few tips and tricks
Here are a few suggestions to help limit post-partum hair loss:
- The sebum cure
We know — greasy hair is not a great look. But sebum is actually your friend! The idea is to let your scalp regulate itself naturally. The sebum cure lasts one month, with daily brushing of the hair.
- A balanced diet
We cannot say it enough — diet is truly the foundation of everything! Eat a balanced diet and favour iron-rich foods such as lentils, as well as wholegrains.
- Vegetable oil baths
There are many oils that promote hair growth and also help to reduce hair loss. Good examples include castor oil and amla oil.
- An iron and/or magnesium supplement
Women who have recently given birth can experience deficiencies, particularly in iron and magnesium. It is possible to meet your daily requirements through a good diet, but sometimes supplementation will be necessary. In that case, you might consider a spirulina course! Do not hesitate to seek advice from a healthcare professional!
