Twins' sleep: synchronisation

Ah, the joy of having Twins! Everyone envies you and points out all the wonderful sides of having twins. But when it comes to bedtime, it is a whole different story! "Twins' sleep: synchronisation." That is what this article is all about. And we very much hope a restorative night's rest will follow…

Twins' sleep: why is it such hard work?

Well, inevitably, when one wakes up, the other follows suit. And suddenly you find yourself with not one, but two babies screaming in your ears.

It also depends on how you feed them. Bottle or breastfeeding? And if breastfeeding, is it on demand or at set times?

It is worth knowing that, even if your newborns look very much alike, they do not necessarily share the same sleep rhythm. You will need to adapt and take their needs into account, however different those may be.

So, is it actually possible to synchronise twins' sleep?

Getting twins to sleep at the same time is not guaranteed to work. However, establishing a small routine can help move things in the right direction.

To that end, it is worth putting a few habits in place:

  • Put both babies to bed at the same time, in the same cot. This could help them get used to sleeping together;
  • Some paediatricians also recommend feeding both babies at the same time. In the case of on-demand breastfeeding, this can be a little more challenging;
  • Additionally, swaddling can help babies settle to sleep and avoid a prolonged period of agitation — which could disturb the other twin and wind them up in turn.

Other possible solutions?

For more on settling to sleep in general and how to establish a good sleep routine, do have a look at our other blog articles on the subject.
